About Janet Rose

Forty-two years a teacher. Thirty-four of them in Palo Alto. One very comfortable sofa in Menlo Park where the teaching continues.

A teacher's teacher

For many years, Janet was a literacy teacher in the Palo Alto Unified School District, where she conducted teacher-training workshops in literacy both in and outside Palo Alto. Her special interest has always been writing — she creates many of her own lessons, drawing on materials from a wide range of sources, and trained in the Reading and Writing Project at Teachers College, Columbia University.

She taught for 42 years, 34 of them in Palo Alto, retiring from teaching second grade at Palo Verde School. She holds an MA in Early Childhood Education and has worked with students from pre-K through 8th grade.

Write With Janet began in 2011 as summer writing classes for students who weren't learning well from regular classroom instruction — and grew into the year-round program it is today.

Also: a child advocate

As a teacher — and as a parent of two children who struggled in school, one with ADHD and one dyslexic — Janet has seen the special-education process from both sides. She offers educational consulting for families whose children are struggling, including guidance through the public-school assessment process, IEP and 504 meetings, and finding outside services that work.
